Will It Fit Your Room?

A baby grand needs less room than most people expect, but it needs that room in a particular shape.

Measure the footprint, not just the length

A 5'0" baby grand is about 5 feet long and 5 feet wide at the keyboard, so plan for a 5-by-5 square plus about 2 feet behind the bench for the player. Most living rooms that hold a sofa and a chair will hold one.

Point the open lid into the room

Sound leaves a grand upward and to the right of the player, so aim the open lid into the room rather than into a corner. Keep the piano off exterior walls and out of direct sun. Both cause humidity swings, which is what puts a piano out of tune in North Texas.

Delivery access is usually fine

A grand is moved on its side with the legs and lid removed, so it needs much less door and stair clearance than its assembled size suggests. Send us a photo of your entryway and we will confirm it before you buy.

Hard floors make it louder

Tile and hardwood reflect a lot of sound, which can make a grand feel too loud in a small room. A rug underneath is the usual fix, and it is worth trying before deciding the piano is too big for the space.
