01
Under 40" tall. The most space-efficient option. Suitable for beginners with limited room.
02
40–43" tall. The most popular home upright — compact cabinet, ideal for students and families.
03
45–48" tall. A step up in action and tone. Common in schools and music studios.
04
50–60" tall. The tallest upright. Approaches grand piano tone with a full-length string scale.
01
An upright fits against any wall. Even a studio upright works where a grand would be impossible.
02
Quality uprights start significantly lower than comparable grands — without sacrificing touch or tone for home use.
03
Vertical action is simpler to regulate and service. Regular tuning keeps an upright playing beautifully for decades.
Each hub compares that series model by model — size, live price and what the step up actually buys.
We wrote these because customers kept asking. No sales pitch — just what we would tell you standing in the showroom.
Upright Pianos
New upright pianos generally range from about $6,000 to $25,000 depending on height, brand, and cabinet finish. At North Texas Piano Gallery our new Kawai uprights start in the mid-$6,000s, and certified pre-owned uprights are available at lower price points.
The categories are defined by height. A console upright (40–43") is the most popular home size, a studio upright (45–48") offers a longer scale and richer tone for schools and serious students, and a professional upright (50–60") is the tallest, approaching grand-piano tone with a full-length string scale.
Yes. A quality upright gives beginners a full 88-key weighted action and acoustic tone in a space-saving, more affordable cabinet — an ideal foundation for students before, or instead of, moving to a grand.
Most upright pianos should be tuned about twice a year to stay at concert pitch (A440). A new piano may need an extra tuning in its first year as the strings settle.
